Origin Acoustics D85EX

The Origin Acoustics D85EX is the flagship model of the Explorer Collection — a range of marine-grade in-ceiling loudspeakers engineered from the ground up for the harshest outdoor and nautical environments. Featuring a fully pivoting 3-way driver assembly, an 8-inch injection-molded graphite woofer, and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, the D85EX delivers audiophile-grade fidelity on yachts, waterfront patios, wet rooms, and luxury outdoor installations. Built on the proven platform of Origin's award-winning Director and Composer Collections, every component — from drivers to crossover networks — is protected by a unique weatherproof coating and stainless steel hardware. The result is a speaker that performs at the highest level while standing up to saltwater, sea spray, temperature extremes, and airborne humidity, backed by a lifetime warranty.

IPX6 Marine Protection Throughout

The D85EX carries an IPX6 weatherproof rating, meaning every element — drivers, crossover networks, and fasteners — has been designed to resist powerful water jets, saltwater spray, and airborne humidity from the start. A unique weatherproof coating is applied across all electro-mechanical components, stainless steel hardware guards against corrosion, and extra gaskets provide additional seals at the baffle. This level of protection sets the Explorer Collection apart from speakers that are merely 'water resistant' as an afterthought, and means installations on open decks, yacht bulkheads, or wet-room ceilings remain performing years down the line without degradation. The entire assembly is backed by a lifetime warranty — a clear statement of confidence in its durability.

Fully Pivoting 3-Way Driver Assembly

Unlike conventional in-ceiling speakers that fire straight down, the D85EX features a fully adjustable 3-way driver assembly where both the woofer and tweeter pivot together toward the listening area, independent of where the speaker is physically cut into the ceiling. This is decisive in real-world installations: a home cinema where seats are off-axis from the ceiling position, a yacht saloon with asymmetric seating, or a patio with a single sweet-spot all benefit from precise directional control. The tri-linear stacked driver configuration — woofer, midrange, tweeter aligned on the same axis — preserves imaging accuracy as the assembly rotates, so the soundstage remains coherent when the listener is not directly beneath the speaker.

X-Wave Surround for Distortion-Free Bass

At mid-bass frequencies (700–1,400 Hz), energy from the woofer cone can travel back toward the center of the driver and reflect, creating harmonic distortion that muddies the sound. Origin's proprietary X-Wave woofer surround is engineered to progressively absorb these frequencies at the cone's edge, preventing the reflection before it starts. The design simultaneously maximises usable cone area by reducing surround width — meaning more air is moved per millimetre of driver diameter, yielding deeper, tighter bass. Combined with an injection-molded graphite (IMG) cone that offers low mass with high rigidity, the D85EX maintains clean output even at high drive levels — audibly relevant in large open spaces such as yacht decks or covered patios where SPL demands are high.

Patented Tool-Less Installation

Origin Acoustics holds Patent #9591390 for its Tool-Less Installation system, and the D85EX benefits from this directly. Spring-loaded clips deploy automatically as the speaker is pressed into the ceiling cutout, spreading the speaker's weight over a larger contact area than conventional dog-leg brackets. This reduces localised stress on the drywall, prevents baffle warping, and results in a more rigid, vibration-free mount — all without a single tool needed after the wire is connected. For integrators, this translates to faster installation, fewer callbacks due to grille rattles or loose-fitting bezels, and a consistently professional result even in awkward overhead positions. The 8.75" round cutout is standard, and the overall depth of 5.59" suits typical ceiling voids.

Treble EQ Switch for On-Site Tuning

A dedicated treble adjustment switch is mounted on the speaker baffle behind the grille, allowing the installing technician to fine-tune high-frequency response after the speaker is in place. This matters because ceiling acoustics change significantly depending on proximity to walls, soffits, or hard reflective surfaces — a reality in yacht interiors and enclosed patios alike. Rather than compensating at the amplifier or processor, the adjustment is made at the source, keeping the signal chain clean. This is a practical tool for achieving a consistently balanced result across multiple zones where individual speakers may be positioned differently, and it removes the need to revisit complex DSP settings for minor room-dependent deviations.
