The Origin Acoustics Director D101 is a 10-inch, two-way in-ceiling loudspeaker built for integrators who need serious low-frequency performance without sacrificing ceiling aesthetics. Part of the premium Director Collection, the D101 is engineered for large rooms, high-ceiling environments, home theater surrounds, and demanding distributed audio installations. Despite housing a full 10-inch woofer, it fits into the same ceiling cutout as a conventional 8-inch speaker — making it an ideal drop-in upgrade for existing installations. A pivoting 1-inch silk tweeter lets the installer aim high-frequency energy directly toward the listening position, while the proprietary X-Wave woofer surround and compression-molded basket work together to keep distortion low even at elevated listening levels. The magnetic, paintable grille blends seamlessly into any décor.

10-Inch Woofer in an 8-Inch Cutout

The D101 houses a full 10-inch polypropylene/butyl-rubber woofer inside a cabinet that requires only a 10 3/8-inch (264mm) ceiling cutout — the same size used by conventional 8-inch in-ceiling speakers. This means genuine low-frequency extension down to 35Hz is available without opening up a larger hole in the ceiling. In retrofit scenarios, the D101 drops straight into the existing 8-inch cutout, allowing a significant performance upgrade with zero additional drywall work. In new builds, it delivers powerful, room-filling bass in large spaces — patios, home theaters, open-plan living areas, or rooms with ceilings above 10 feet — while remaining visually indistinguishable from a smaller speaker once the grille is fitted.

Pivoting Silk Tweeter for Precision Aiming

The D101's 1-inch silk dome tweeter is mounted on a pivot, allowing the installer to angle the high-frequency driver toward the primary listening position rather than firing straight down. Tool-Less Bayonet Mounting System

Origin Acoustics' patented tool-less mounting system (Patent #9591390) uses spring-loaded clips with multiple contact points to distribute the speaker's weight more evenly than traditional dog-leg clamps. No screwdriver or drill is needed once the cutout is made — the speaker locks securely into place with a simple twist of the bayonet ring. Broader pressure distribution reduces vibration transfer into the drywall, which lowers the risk of rattles or structural resonance at high playback levels. For integrators handling multi-room installations with many ceiling speakers, the time saving per unit is meaningful, and the secure mechanical lock reduces the likelihood of call-backs caused by a loose or vibrating speaker.

X-Wave Woofer Surround Cuts Distortion

The X-Wave surround is engineered to progressively absorb the energy that travels back up the cone when the driver reaches the limits of its excursion — the same mechanical effect that causes audible distortion and cone breakup at higher volumes. By damping these reflected waves rather than letting them bounce, the D101 maintains cleaner output as power levels rise. The design also maximises usable cone area by keeping the surround itself narrow, which contributes to the speaker's ability to fit into a smaller-than-expected enclosure. Magnetic Paintable Grille — Discreet and Serviceable

The micro-bezel, micro-perforated grille attaches magnetically, covering the full speaker assembly with a clean, minimal appearance that can be painted to match any ceiling colour. Magnetic attachment means the grille can be removed and refitted instantly without tools — useful when a room is repainted or when access to the speaker is needed for servicing.
