Entry-level 4K digital signage media player

HD226

The HD226 is BrightSign's Series 6 entry-level 4K media player, designed for commercial digital signage and kiosk deployments across retail, corporate, hospitality, transportation, and education environments. Running on the purpose-built BrightSignOS, it delivers single 4K 10-bit HDR decode at 60p, dual Full HD playback, and modular 2D HTML5 motion graphics — all without a PC. An integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) enables on-device AI applications without compromising video performance. With Gigabit Ethernet, an optional M.2 LTE modem, a secure internal microSD socket, and BrightSign Control device management included free, the HD226 is built for reliable, long-term operation at scale.

Purpose-Built BrightSignOS Reliability

Purpose-Built BrightSignOS Reliability

BrightSignOS is engineered exclusively for digital signage — not a general-purpose OS trimmed down, but a ground-up design with a minimal attack surface and no unnecessary background processes. In practice this means the HD226 can run 24-7 without performance degradation or security risk from unrelated software updates. Automatic fault detection and self-healing protocols recover the player without on-site intervention, and long-term OS patching is committed for 5+ years. For installations in retail, transport hubs, or corporate lobbies where a black screen is simply not acceptable, BrightSignOS removes the single biggest variable: the OS itself.

Integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU)

Integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU)

The HD226 includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit on-chip — hardware acceleration for AI inference tasks such as audience analytics, object detection, or adaptive content triggering. Critically, the NPU runs these workloads independently, so AI features do not steal headroom from the video decoder or HTML5 engine. This means a retailer can run real-time audience measurement and display full-4K promotional video simultaneously, without frame drops or compromises. For installers this future-proofs the deployment: AI-enabled applications can be added after installation via software, without swapping hardware.

4K 10-bit HDR at 60p with Efficient Codec Support

4K 10-bit HDR at 60p with Efficient Codec Support

The HD226 decodes single-stream 4K at 10-bit colour depth and 60 frames per second, supporting H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC at 4K60 as well as VP9. H.265 roughly halves the bitrate of H.264 for equivalent quality, which matters directly for network headroom and storage cost on large signage networks. 10-bit HDR means richer colour gradients and deeper contrast on HDR-capable displays — a visible improvement in bright retail environments or high-end hospitality lobbies where colour accuracy sets the tone. Dual Full HD streams can also be decoded simultaneously, giving content designers flexibility for multi-zone layouts on a single player.

Dual Ethernet: Gigabit LAN + 100Base-T Display Control

Dual Ethernet: Gigabit LAN + 100Base-T Display Control

The HD226 carries two Ethernet ports: a standard Gigabit RJ45 for network content delivery, and a dedicated 100Base-T Ethernet port specifically for controlling and identifying attached displays. The control port allows the player to communicate with compatible display hardware (via RS232-over-IP or display manufacturer APIs) to manage power state, input source, and identification — without routing control traffic through the main network switch. For large deployments this separates management traffic from content traffic, simplifies troubleshooting, and allows display control even when the primary network is congested.

Optional LTE Modem and Dual MicroSD for Off-Grid Reliability

Optional LTE Modem and Dual MicroSD for Off-Grid Reliability

An internal M.2 E Key slot accepts an optional cellular LTE modem module, enabling fully wireless 4G connectivity for locations where running Ethernet cabling is impractical — outdoor signage, retail pop-ups, vehicle-mounted displays, or remote kiosks. The HD226 also pairs an external-facing MicroSD slot with a second internal MicroSD socket. The internal socket is physically protected from tampering, making it suitable for storing fallback content or player identity files securely. Together, these options mean the player can be deployed confidently in locations where both wired connectivity and physical access are unreliable.

GPIO and IR Interfaces for Custom Interactivity

GPIO and IR Interfaces for Custom Interactivity

The HD226 includes a 12-pin Phoenix Contact GPIO connector with 8 bi-directional GPIO lines, plus an IR 3.5mm port for infrared input and output. GPIO enables direct, low-latency hardware triggers: a motion sensor can switch content, a button press can launch a specific playlist, or an LED array can be driven to reflect player state — all without a separate microcontroller. The IR port can receive commands from standard remote controls or transmit IR signals to control display hardware. This level of control interface is typically found only on more expensive players, making the HD226 suitable for interactive kiosks, exhibit installations, and self-service terminals without additional interface hardware.

Free BrightSign Control and 200+ CMS Partner Integrations

Free BrightSign Control and 200+ CMS Partner Integrations

Every HD226 ships with BrightSign Control included at no cost — a cloud-based device management service for real-time player health monitoring, remote diagnostics, and content integration with any CMS. For larger networks, BrightSign Control Plus adds bulk operations, AI-assisted diagnostics, and centralized scheduling. Beyond BrightSign's own tools, the player integrates with 200+ third-party CMS partners via open APIs, meaning customers are not locked into a proprietary content platform. This breadth of CMS compatibility is a practical advantage when selling into enterprise accounts or education institutions that have already standardised on a specific CMS solution.

5-Year Warranty with Included Parts and Labor

5-Year Warranty with Included Parts and Labor

All HD226 players purchased from BrightSign and registered after January 1, 2025 carry a 5-year standard warranty covering both parts and labor — significantly above the 1-2 year standard common in the digital signage player category. Players linked to an active BrightSign Control or BrightSign Author Plus account are enrolled automatically. For resellers and integrators, this warranty substantially reduces the post-sale support risk on long-term contracts and makes the total cost of ownership argument straightforward: a 5-year deployment horizon is covered from day one without additional extended-warranty purchases.
