Premium 6-inch fully pivoting in-ceiling loudspeaker
Origin Acoustics D65
The Origin Acoustics Director D65 is a 2-way in-ceiling loudspeaker from the premium Director Collection, designed for custom integration in residential home audio, multi-room audio, and home theatre installations. At the heart of the D65 is a fully pivoting 6.5" IMG woofer paired with Origin Acoustics' patented 1" Silk DPSD (Dual Plane Stabilized Diaphragm) tweeter — both of which can be rotated 360° after installation to direct sound precisely towards the listening position. The speaker mounts via Origin's proprietary tool-less Zip-Klip bayonet system, making it ideal for retrofit installations where speed and clean results matter. With 91 dB sensitivity, a 45 Hz–20 kHz frequency response, and onboard bass and treble trim switches, the D65 adapts to different room acoustics without external EQ.

360° Pivoting Woofer and Tweeter
Unlike most in-ceiling speakers where the drivers fire straight down, the D65 allows both the 6.5" IMG woofer and the 1" Silk DPSD tweeter to pivot independently through a full 360° arc after the speaker is installed. This matters especially in rooms where the speaker cannot be placed directly above the listening position — a common reality in retrofit installations. By redirecting the woofer and tweeter toward the seating area, the installer can achieve a proper stereo image and focused high-frequency delivery without repositioning the speaker or cutting new holes. For surround-sound rear channels, the woofer can instead be aimed at a side wall to create a diffuse, enveloping effect. The result is acoustic precision that lives entirely within the ceiling, invisible and on-target.

Patented DPSD Tweeter Technology
The 1" Silk Dual Plane Stabilized Diaphragm (DPSD) tweeter is a patented Origin Acoustics innovation that addresses a fundamental limitation of conventional dome tweeters. Standard tweeters attach their suspension only at the voice-coil, which limits how low the crossover point can be set and causes distortion as the dome flexes unevenly. The DPSD design adds a second suspension attachment at the peak of the dome, stabilising the diaphragm across two planes simultaneously. This allows the tweeter to be crossed over at a significantly lower frequency, which improves dispersion at the transition between woofer and tweeter — the frequency range most critical to perceived vocal clarity and imaging. In practice, listeners experience a broader, more even high-frequency spread across the room, with noticeably lower distortion at higher listening levels.

X-Wave Woofer Surround
At high excursion levels, a woofer cone that hits its mechanical limit and abruptly stops sends standing waves rippling back through the cone surface — a form of harmonic distortion that adds coloration and muddiness to bass reproduction. Origin Acoustics' X-Wave Surround is a progressive suspension design that absorbs the energy of this impact gradually rather than allowing a hard stop. The compression-molded IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) woofer basket further contributes by being both highly stiff and acoustically inert, so it does not add its own resonances to the output. Together these technologies mean the D65 delivers clean, controlled bass reproduction even at elevated volumes — a practical advantage in larger living rooms or open-plan spaces where ceiling speakers are often pushed harder to fill the room.

Tool-Less Zip-Klip Bayonet Installation
The D65 uses Origin Acoustics' patented Zip-Klip bayonet mounting system (Patent #9591390), which eliminates the screwdriver entirely from the installation process. The bayonet ring is pushed into the ceiling cut-out, the four Zip-Klip grips are pulled down by hand to clamp against the back of the drywall, and the speaker body twists 15° clockwise to lock into the ring — no tools required at any stage. This significantly reduces installation time per unit in multi-room projects, and the distributed clamping load of the four clips protects the ceiling material from cracking better than traditional single-point dog-leg clamps. The speaker can also be removed just as quickly for access or replacement without damaging the ceiling, which is a meaningful advantage during snagging or service visits.

Paintable Magnetic Grille with Micro Bezel
The D65 ships with a perforated grille that attaches magnetically — no clips, no visible fasteners. The micro bezel design minimises the visible ring around the grille for a near-flush finish that blends naturally into a ceiling. The grille is paintable with spray paint, allowing it to be colour-matched to virtually any ceiling tone so the speaker becomes effectively invisible once installed. The magnetic attachment means the grille can be removed and replaced quickly for painting or repainting without any risk of scratching the ceiling or leaving marks. Square replacement grilles are also available separately, offering an alternative aesthetic for installations where a round grille would stand out.

Onboard Bass and Treble Trim Switches
Every D65 includes two rear-panel toggle switches — one for treble adjustment and one for bass — that allow the frequency response to be tuned to suit the acoustic environment without requiring an external equaliser or DSP unit. Rooms with many hard surfaces (tile, glass, hardwood) tend to reflect and accumulate high frequencies, while heavily furnished or carpeted rooms absorb them. The trim switches compensate for these differences at the speaker level, so the integrator can achieve a balanced, natural sound in a wide range of room types with minimal external processing. This is particularly useful in budget-conscious residential projects where a full DSP amplifier is not part of the system.
