The HD225 is BrightSign's entry-level Series 5 media player, purpose-built for interactive digital signage and kiosk applications that demand 4K video quality and reliable, always-on operation. It decodes 4K60p HDR10 video and handles dual Full HD streams simultaneously, making it equally capable of driving a single 4K display or a split-screen layout. GPIO, IR, and optional Wi-Fi connections enable a wide range of interactive and sensor-triggered experiences without the complexity or cost of a full PC. Running exclusively on BrightSignOS, the HD225 delivers the platform's signature uptime, built-in remote management, and compatibility with 200+ CMS partners — making it straightforward to deploy and manage at any scale.
4K60p HDR10 and Dual Full HD Decoding
The HD225 decodes 4K video at 60 frames per second in 8-bit, or 10-bit at 30p, and supports simultaneous dual Full HD at 60p decode from a single player. HDR10 and HLG wide colour are supported natively. In practice, this means a single HD225 can drive a 4K display with a high-quality main video zone and a secondary information panel — both running smoothly without frame drops or artefacts. The supported codec set (H.265-HEVC at 60p, H.264-AVC, VP9) and a broad container list (MP4, MKV, MXF, WEBM, TS and more) means content from virtually any production workflow plays back without transcoding, reducing preparation time and storage overhead.
BrightSignOS: Purpose-Built Reliability
BrightSignOS is not a trimmed Android or Windows image — it is an operating system designed from the ground up exclusively for digital signage. It runs only BrightSign-approved code, uses a secure boot chain, and carries a small attack surface that minimises security exposure in public-facing installations. Automatic fault detection and self-healing protocols restart failed processes without manual intervention or on-site visits. Long-term OS patching is committed for five or more years, protecting the investment well beyond the hardware lifecycle. Every HD225 ships with BrightSign Control, a free cloud-based remote monitoring and control service. It covers status visibility, remote reboot, and basic diagnostics without any subscription fee. For larger deployments or more demanding network management needs, BrightSign Control Plus adds bulk operations, AI-assisted diagnostics, and centralised scheduling. Crucially, neither tier requires proprietary infrastructure on the customer side. This free baseline eliminates a recurring licence cost that competing platforms charge per player, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership for multi-screen rollouts.
GPIO and IR for Interactive Experiences
The HD225 carries a 12-pin Phoenix GPIO connector with 8 bi-directional GPIO lines, plus a 3.5 mm IR in-out port. This allows direct connection of buttons, proximity sensors, reed switches, and other low-voltage triggers without additional interface hardware. Combined with the player's event-driven scripting engine in BrightSignOS, these IOs enable branching video playback, sensor-triggered content changes, and audience-responsive installations — typical in museum exhibits, retail kiosks, and wayfinding systems. UDP and serial commands (via the network or, on the HD1025 sibling, a dedicated serial port) extend control to lighting rigs and AV switching equipment.
Optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth via M.2 Module
The HD225 includes an internal M.2 E Key slot that accepts BrightSign's optional WD-105 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module. Two external antenna connectors are already present on the enclosure, so adding wireless connectivity later is a tool-less internal upgrade rather than an external dongle. This is directly relevant for installations where running Ethernet is impractical — retail pop-ups, rented venues, or retrofit environments — while keeping the enclosure clean and cable-free. Bluetooth also opens proximity-triggered and beacon-based interaction scenarios without additional hardware.
Compact, Fanless Enclosure for Demanding Environments
The HD225 measures 205 × 185.9 × 19.2 mm and weighs just 590 g. The patented anodised aluminium shell is fanless, so there are no moving parts to wear out, no filter maintenance, and no fan noise — important in quiet museum or retail environments. The operating temperature range of 0°C to 50°C covers most indoor commercial environments, including plant floors and display windows where ambient temperature can spike. A locking 12V-3A power connector prevents accidental disconnection — a real-world reliability detail that matters in high-traffic or accessible installations. Built-in keyhole slots support direct wall mounting without a separate bracket.
